Oscars 2019: Top six moments that tell the story of Academy Awards 2019

The 91st Oscars went without a hitch, even though there was no host this year, which sparked discontent from some viewers. This was the first time producers managed to run the whole show without an official presenter in 30 years. But the winners and performers still made sure the night was full of hilarity and heartfelt speeches.

Here are the top six moments of the Oscars 2019

1. The show usually starts with the host making a long speech that pokes fun at the stars in the audience or even about Hollywood in general.

But this year, the show opened with a performance from the surviving members of rockbound Queen, as well as latest frontman Adam Lambert.

Stars such as Allison Janney and Amy Adams got very involved in the performance and were seen dancing on their feet in the audience.

2. The song Shallow from A Star is Born won Best Original Song.

But the stars of the film, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, made sure their intimate performance of the song was the moment everybody would be talking about afterwards.

The pair got up close and personal as Bradley slid next to Lady Gaga on her piano bench for the final part of the song.

This resulted in many fans questioning whether they were still acting or not.

3. Alfonso Cuaron impressed viewers by having three speeches prepared, due to the huge success of Roma, which he wrote, directed, produced and edited himself.

He was prepared in case viewers got sick of hearing the same speech three times when Roma won Best Foreign Language Film and he then won Best Director and Best Cinematography.

Each of Mr Cuaron’s speeches were not generic and had different quotes and metaphors.

Many people thought the film would also win Best Picture, but that category went to Green Book.

4. After Spike Lee won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansman, he used the opportunity to make several political statements.

He spoke about how the US was built on the enslavement of Africans and the genocide of Native people.

He also thanked his grandmother, whose own mother was a slave, for paying for his education.

Mr Lee also referenced the 2020 Presidential Election in the US and called for the audience and public to “make the moral choice between love versus hate!”

5. British actress Olivia Colman gave a charming winner’s speech after being awarded as Best Actress.

Clearly overwhelmed, she began her speech with: “It’s genuinely quite stressful. This is hilarious!”

She also thanked her children and said she hoped they were watching because “this is not going to happen again”.

When the 44-year-old was urged to wrap up her speech, she blew a raspberry and randomly shouted “Lady Gaga!” before exiting the stage.

6. Rami Malek won an Oscar for his portrayal of Queen icon Freddie Mercury, after making an emotional speech, he fell of the stage.

Paramedics rushed to his side but he quickly picked himself back up again before showering people nearby with champagne in celebration later in the evening.

He said afterwards: “Being on that stage, I don’t know how I looked on that stage, but I never thought this would happen in my life.”
