Bohemian Rhapsody: How many Oscars did Bohemian Rhapsody win?

Bohemian Rhapsody was seen by many as the Awards season’s greatest upset. The fact that the biopic won a Golden Globe for Best Picture caused consternation amongst critics and detractors of the movie’s ex-director Bryan Singer. With the 2019 Oscars over, it is time to count the tally of winners and losers.

How many Oscars did Bohemian Rhapsody win?

Though the Freddie Mercury biopic missed out on Best Picture, it did not leave the ceremony empty-handed.

Bohemian Rhapsody was nominated for five awards and won four of them.

The awards won at the 2019 Academy Awards were the following:

Best Actor: Rami Malek

Best Sound Mixing: Paul Massey, Tim Cavagin and John Casali.

Best Film Editing: John Ottman.

Best Sound Editing: John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone.

But not all are pleased with the number of awards Bohemian Rhapsody has won.

Despite the biopic’s positive reception from fans, critics were not enamoured.

Many took to Twitter to lodge their displeasure at the film’s Oscars victory.

Slash Film’s Ethan Anderton wrote: “Bohemian Rhapsody doesn’t deserve Best Sound Mixing or Best Sound Editing at all.

“First Man should have gotten both of those awards.”

Taking issue with the same award was TV writer Chase Mitchell, who wrote: “Bohemian Rhapsody literally just got an Academy Award for sound editing for putting Queen songs in a Queen movie.”

IndieWire’s David Ehrlich wrote: “Bohemian Rhapsody has now won more Oscars than Carol, Lady Bird, Paddington 2 and I dunno let’s go with Andrei Tarkovsky combined.”

The Los Angeles Times’ Justin Chang wrote: “Was trying to kid myself into thinking Bohemian Rhapsody wouldn’t win this many Oscars, but it’s time to face the awful [truth].”

One person pleased with the result was Queen guitarist Brian May.

May wrote on Instagram: “Congratulations to Rami – and our sound mixing team and sound editors – and John Ottman – brilliant editor of Bohemian Rhapsody.

“We won 4 Oscars ?!! Ouch ! Amazing. Bri”

Bohemian Rhapsody is now playing in cinemas.
