Dementia: Barbara Windsor wishes for a cure for others

But the brave Dame is drawing strength from the knowledge that she is helping others have a future where the cruel condition can be defeated. The EastEnders and Carry On actress, 81, is backing husband Scott Mitchell in his bid to raise £100,000 for charity Dementia Revolution by running the London Marathon on April 28 with EastEnders stars calling themselves Barbara’s Revolutionaries. Scott, 56, said: “Barbara knows she is unwell but gets great comfort from the fact we are trying to help other people and do something positive.

“The heartbreaking thing is a cure is possible. They believe that, with the right funding, in six years a cure or at least major breakthrough could be found.

“That is what we are aiming for. We accept it would be for future generations. We know it will be too late for Barbara but she still wants to do what she can to find a cure. We both do.

“If my great-nephews can be spared what we are experiencing and thousands of other families are experiencing then how amazing would that be?”

TV legend Barbara was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, five years ago and Scott revealed her condition last May.

Despite their own struggles, the couple are determined to find positives in the situation.

Scott said: “She sometimes forgets I’m running the marathon but is thrilled when I remind her. Barbara always did a lot for charity and knowing she is backing Dementia Revolution is helping us cope with what we are going through.”

Scott, married to Barbara for 18 years, recently admitted he has therapy to help cope with the fact she now needs round-the-clock care.

It is not yet known whether Barbara will be well enough to see Scott and the BBC soap stars compete in the event. He said: “She has good and bad days. When she is confused and upset all I can do is make her feel as comfortable as possible.” Asked about his marathon training, Scott added: “When I want to give up I just think of Barbara. That will keep me going on the day.”

Scott is running with Kellie Shirley, who played Carly Wicks, Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale) and Jake Wood (Max Branning). They have so far raised more than £47,000 – boosted by a donation from Sir Elton John – for Dementia Revolution.
