Why your car will soon stop you from getting a speeding fine: Limiters to become mandatory

All new cars could be fitted with automatics speed limiters to prevent motorists from speeding.

Any car sold in the EU could be forced to have these speed limits within the next three years, after calls for more safety measures to be introduced.

MEPs have approved the fitment of a range of new safety measures to try and reduce road deaths.

The European Transport Safety Council, says the limits will reduce traffic collisions by 30 per cent saving around 25,000 lives within 15 years of coming into force.

The ESTC has recommended a full on/off switch to be included to “to aid public acceptance at introduction.”

The system would automatically switch itself on as the engine is turned on. It will be able to be overridden if the motorist harshly presses down on the accelerator but it could prevent a percentage of accidents.

The ETSC also stipulates that the system would want you for going over the limit.

It says: “If the driver continues to drive above the speed limit for several seconds, the system should sound a warning for a few seconds and display a visual warning until the vehicle is operating at or below the speed limit again.”

Data loggers would also become mandatory to log breaches in the speed limit.

While the UK is primed to leave the EU, the rules are still expected to be applied for motorists across Britain.

The VCA has previously stated that it intends to mirror the European rules post-Brexit, reports Auto Express.

Therefore, cars made for the British market could have automative limiters installed.
