Weight loss: Never eat this one food for breakfast if you want to lose weight

Weight loss can be easily boosted at breakfast time, but if you’re mistakenly eating certain foods because you think they’re healthy, the results of your diet could well be stalled. An expert has revealed one food that dieters should never eat first thing in the morning. Those looking to slim down should always avoid granola and breakfast bars. It’s easy to think that a combination of oats, dried fruit and nuts must be nutritious and diet-friendly, but this isn’t always the case.

Granola and breakfast bars might seem like an easy item to grab in the morning and munch on the go, but you could end up eating as many calories as if you sat down to a dessert.

They can be packed full of sugar and no good for weight loss goals, Dr Lisa Davis, Vice President of Scientific and Clinical Affairs at Medifast, told Shape.

“Most commercial granola bars are basically oatmeal cookies in disguise, with a lot more sugar than you need,” David said.

If you’re looking for an easy but healthy grab-and-go option you can make one yourself with minimal effort.

“A little natural peanut butter on a folded slice of wholegrain bread is better,” David recommended.

“Make a couple of these mini sandwiches in advance and keep one in your fridge at home, and one at work.”

If you’re stuck on granola bars though, you can always make some yourself – that way you know exactly what ingredients are going in and you can control the sugar content.

Weekend breakfasts and brunches often seem like a time to relax and indulge after a hard week.

But there are still ways you can stay on top of your slimming goals, Davis said.

She recommends avoiding muffins, fruit juice cocktails and sweets when facing a buffet.

“Start with eggs, lean meat (try Canadian bacon instead of regular), salmon, fresh veggies, and fruit,” she advised.

Take care with cocktails too. Bloody Marys may be a good pick-me-up but the alcohol content won’t help you shape up. Just an ounce of the vodka in the red drink comes to 100 calories.

It’s not just what you eat but how much you eat. Less is not always best. If you don’t eat enough at breakfast you could be hindering your chances of losing weight.

It’s vital you eat the right number of calories in this first meal of the day, Stephanie Clarke, RD, and Willow Jarosh, RD, of C&J Nutrition told PopSugar.

“It’ll leave you feeling hungry soon after eating, which will cause you to need more food and can translate to more calories consumed over the course of the entire day,” they said.

For those looking to slim down, between 300 and 350 calories should be eaten at breakfast.
