Star Wars 9 title and can Episode IX 'FIX' The Last Jedi fan backlash? JJ Abrams says THIS

The director opened up about what fans can expect from the grand conclusion of nine movies across 40 years of cinema. The reaction to Episode 8 was not what Disney and Lucasfilm were expecting. The Last Jedi split the fandom in a way not even Jar Jar and the midichlorians managed. It wasn’t just a general outrage at something rather ridiculous, it was a genuine and complicated response to the entire franchise under Kathleen Kennedy’s leadership. Much of what Abrams seemed to set up in The Force Awakens was undone or ignored in the sequel. Has the director just revealed he will now do the same with now he is back at the helm?

Star Wars fans have been openly critical of the decision to give three separate directors complete control over three movies which actually form one narrative. Especially when the second director appeared to have his own clear and very different vision from what had been set up before – and in the six previous movies.

The entire mantra that “the past must die” was taken by many as an assault and betrayal of forty years of devoted, loyal and extremely invested fandom.

Abrams has already signalled his intention to pay tribute to as much of the Star Wars legacy as possible in the final film.

On the red carpet this week at The Oscar Wilde Awards he was asked directly if the making of Episode 9 was affected by the fan reaction to The Last Jedi.

Abrams said: “I think every movie is its own movie and this is a trilogy. We brought to that movie all the passion and hard work that we would have no matter what. I think the story speaks for itself. I really, truly can’t wait for you to see it.”

It is possible he is distancing the two movies with his comment, but it certainly sounds like oy stands apart from what came directly before.

He also summed up what he wants audiences to feel after the movie: “You have to determine that yourself. I really can’t wait you to see it. There are a lot of words that we hope you will feel. Obviously, the biggest and most important one I think is satisfied!”

As for the title reveal…

Every interview and encounter currently is obligated to ask about the title and trailer release dates.

Asked if he could reveal anything, Abrams (to nobody’s surprise) said: “No.”
