R. Kelly turns himself in after being charged with sexual abuse in Chicago

Last night, a warrant for his arrest was issued and the Grammy winner turned himself in to police later on that day. The R&B star has recently faced decades of sexual abuse claims against women and underage girls. He has never been convicted and has previously denied other allegations.

His attorney Steve Greenberg told said his client was “extraordinarily disappointed and depressed” and allegedly maintains his innocence.

He was put in handcuffs when he entered a Chicago police station in the early hours of this morning.

The singer will appear in court on Saturday for a bail hearing.

Mr Greenberg offered to sit down with R. Kelly’s prosecutors before the filing to explain why the charges are “baseless” but they refused.

If R. Kelly is convicted he could face a maximum of seven years for each count which could span the rest of his life.

A documentary series called Surviving R. Kelly aired just weeks before his indictment which includes allegations of abuse against him from many women including his own wife.

After the series aired, attorney Kim Foxx of Cook County, Illinois urged other women to come forward.

In the past, R. Kelly has been allegedly sued by multiple women who accused him of having sex with them while they were underage.

Most of these cases were settled out of court.

Despite these allegations, R. Kelly has continued to make music and be a successful R&B singer.

The social media #MuteRKelly campaign has grown to stop his music being played along with other movements.
