Piers Morgan: ‘We like humble royals’ GMB host slams Meghan Markle’s lavish baby shower

Piers Morgan, 59, spoke out about Meghan Markle’s five-day celebration in New York and suggested the “extravagant” occasion would come across as “ostentatious”. The ITV star spoke with DailyMailTV in Los Angeles yesterday where he said baby showers are not a very British tradition. He told the publication in a video chat: “We don’t really have baby showers in Britain. “The concept of a very extravagant party with a load of famous people turning up to celebrate the arrival of a baby in a couple of months is not something we would do so the Queen would be like, ‘What is this?’ to start with.’

“Secondly, I think, the sheer scale of the opulence of all this. The key thing about the royals is to be understated – But the absolutely number one rule is don’t rub the British people’s noses in your wealth.”

The Duchess of Sussex’s lavish trip to the Big Apple reportedly included a rented £58,000 suite at The Mark penthouse, attended by stars including Serena Williams and Amal Clooney.

Meghan also flew home via private jet paid for by Amal, 41, which reportedly cost $125,000.

She is also believed to have arrived in New York on a private jet, meaning her round-trip travel cost a quarter of a million dollars, according to The Daily Mail.

Piers even hinted Meghan may become the new “Marie Antoinette”, the last Queen of France.

He said: “She has to be careful. We don’t want her turning into the new Marie Antoinette… as she enjoyed all her palaces.

“British people like their royals to be humble.”

Marie Antoinette was known for her lavish lifestyle but beheaded for treason nine months after her husband Louis XVI was executed during the French Revolution.

The Good Morning Britain host recently took to Twitter to reply to a tweet by Kensington Palace who addressed UK school’s half-term break.

The message read: “73 per cent of the poorest families cannot always afford to feed their children during the school holidays, a gap which is estimated to affect three million children and young people across the UK, and 700,000 in London.”

To which Piers replied: “Strange thing to post as Meghan Markle enjoys a £££££ orgy of opulent extravagance for her baby shower…”

Meanwhile, the Duchess seemingly appeared to enjoy her highly publicised baby shower and welcomed a host of famous faces to the event.

Her pal and wife of George Clooney, Amal is said to have spent £125,000 on the luxury flight to the UK for the pregnant Duchess of Sussex, according to The Sun.

A source told the publication: “Meghan hitched a ride with Amal on the private jet.

“Amal was already flying back and covering all the costs so it made total sense.”

Her Suits co-star Abigail Spencer, 37, was also invited to the event, but was stranded in New York after the baby shower.
