Mount Etna eruption: Volcano blows on Sicily blasting huge ash cloud, flights cancelled

Catania Airport restricted landings to just four per hour at 8.30am local time due to the cloud of ash. Take-offs have not been affected by the explosion of Europe’s most active volcano. The airport warned of possible delays to travel.

Mount Etna is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and is in an almost constant state of activity.

It sits above the convergent plate margin between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate.

In 2013, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which are chosen for their cultural, historical, scientific or other form of significance.
