Bohemian Rhapsody: Rami Malek film revelation 'If THIS hadn't worked we were f***ed'

It seems tough to imagine anyone ever doubted Bohemian Rhapsody would be a spectacular success. It has taken over $845million worldwide and scooped up a gleaming hoard of awards. Yet, the production was famously troubled almost from the beginning. By now everyone knows that director Bryan Singer was fired with just weeks remaining on the main shoot but the biggest stress and drama surrounded what happened at the very start.

Queen legend Brian May has started to reveal more and more about the BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY production, as has leading man Rami Malek.

The home entertainment packages contain extensive bonus features where cast and crew talk about making the movie.

Yet, the one man more than any other who had to bring it all together is the editor, John Ottman, who received an Oscar nomination for his efforts to stitch together a movie with two different directors. He has added to the comments by Malek and his castmates about the decision to film the huge Live Aid sequences first.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY: RAMI MALEK REVEALED THE ONE THING HE DID NOT WANT TO DO IN THE FREDDIE MERCURY MOVIE

Ottman told Deadline it was a “ballsy” move.

He said: “I knew if that thing wasn’t cathartic and moved people, we were f***ed.

“So again, I referred to it before as the Death Star Sequence for Bohemian Rhapsody because it basically bookended with it. Everyone talks about it throughout the film. Are you going to Live Aid? Did you hear about Live Aid? It’s like such a buildup to this thing, so that kept me tossing and turning for an entire year because it was the first thing we shot.”

On the Bohemian Rhapsody bonus features producer Graham King added: “Starting the production with Live Aid was madness. It was such a full -on thing starting at the deep end…

“They (the cast)were not happy that Live Aid was the first week of shooting because they wanted to get their feet wet and build to it.”

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY IS OUT NOW ON DIGITAL AND DOWNLOAD, AND ON DVD AND BLU-RAY ON MARCH 3
