Dan Walker: 'Don't panic' BBC Breakfast host speaks out on Carol Kirkwood debacle

Dan Walker fronted Monday’s BBC Breakfast show with co-host Louise Minchin, 50, however, the programme did not exactly go to plan. As per usual, the hosts introduced meteorologist Carol Kirkwood to the programme shortly after 6am to report the weather forecast. But the presenter was abruptly cut-off half way through her segment and replaced with a peculiar credit, which read: “weather presenter editing playlist.” Presenters Dan, 41, and Louise were stunned by the technical gaffe and went on to discuss the unusual moment.

Making light of the situation, the father-of-three joked: “Oh she’s editing the playlist as you can see there.”

However, Louise appeared genuinely astonished and gasped as she watched the screen fickler erratically.

She said: “I can’t believe we’ve just lost Carol like that,” to which Dan replied: “She’s OK by the way and we’ll be with her a little bit later on.”

He continued: “But that is the end of the weather for now, we’ll sort that out for you and we’ll be back with Carol.

“That was very dramatic, she just went and we got the blue screen of doom.”

The glitch sparked concern among fans of show with some taking to Twitter to ask what had happened to Carol.

One person said: “BBC Breakfast lost Carol with the weather, pity,” while another asked: “@carolkirkwood what happened?

In an attempt to calm viewers down, Dan took to his own Twitter account to set the record straight and offer an explanation.

“Don’t panic @carolkirkwood is OK,” he stated. “Bit of technical stuff.”

It comes almost a week after host Naga Munchetty persuaded Carol to sing on national television from the balcony of The London Coliseum.

The 43-year-old broadcaster told viewers the TV personality would perform for them later in the show on Valentine’s Day.

Naga remarked: “Really looking forward to seeing you in 20 minutes. I understand you are going to sing to us?”

“I don’t actually remember agreeing to this actually, Naga,” Carol said, with a nervous laugh.

Later in the show, Carol returned and was filmed standing at the edge of the theatre’s roof as she sang Lionel Richie’s hit Hello.

At the end of her performance a shy Carol quipped: “Enough! I can’t sing! I never said I could sing that was horrendous!”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
