ITV GMB: 'Seriously' Danny Dyer and Richard Madeley clash in ISIS schoolgirl debate

Danny, 41, is known for offering his views on topical subjects and this morning’s guest stint on Good Morning Britain was no different.

Joining ITV hosts Richard Madeley, 62, and Kate Garraway, 51, the EastEnders actor gave his take on whether ISIS schoolgirl Shamima Begum should return to the UK.

The schoolgirl was one of three teenagers to leave London to join the Islamic State four years ago, but after being discovered in a Syrian refugee camp last week, it was revealed she had recently given birth to a baby boy.

It is now being debated whether Shamima should be allowed to take residency in the UK again, as international law permits if a Briton doesn’t have claim to another nationality, they should be allowed to return.

Weighing in on the debate, Danny told the hosts: “[She had] no guidance, clearly. Because if you think about it, what on earth?

“How has it got into her head that going to Syria at 15 years of age is the answer? What is that about?

“Who is there to guide her, talk to her? Why is she so lost within her soul that she thinks that’s the answer to go to Syria?

However, Richard stepped in and told the actor: “She wouldn’t have gone if it weren’t for the internet. That’s the big game changer in our society.”

Responding to Richard’s comment, Danny added: “We’ve all got the internet Rich.

“Are you thinking of going to Syria?” he asked the host.

“I mean seriously,” Danny continued, with Richard replying: “Well I doubt she would’ve been radicalised in the way she clearly was before she went.”

Not content with Richard’s statement, Danny added: “Being radicalised and actually jumping on a plane at 15 and going to Syria, I don’t understand what’s going on there.

“Now she wants to come back, so what do we do?”

Richard then asked if Danny thinks the mother should be allowed to return to the UK, with the actor telling him: “Yes I do [think she should come back]. Because, I feel she needs a chance maybe to explain what was going on.

“Maybe we can understand a little bit more about how they got to her and how she felt that it was the right move to jump on a plane and leave this country at 15 years of age.

“She’s still a young girl,” the actor admitted.

Continuing his response, Danny said: “Look at the people around her, who was looking after her? Maybe we can learn from it. I don’t know.”

As well as discussing topical issues, the actor also spoke about his involvement with the the Prince’s Trust Mentor Of The Year scheme.

Speaking about his own mentor during the early days of his acting career, Danny said: “I had a mentor myself for a couple of years and I realise how important it was now – someone looking out for you in your life.

“When that’s taken away from you, you realise the importance of it.

“As human beings we should look after each other anyway, especially young people.”
