Huawei P20 Pro has a problem as the iPhone wins an important battle yet AGAIN

Huawei had an incredible year in 2018 producing some of the most advanced smartphones the world has ever seen.

The firm’s P20 Pro won a host of awards with its clever triple rear camera, bright screen and epic battery life impressing the tech world.

This device deserved all of its praise with Express.co.uk saying in our P20 Pro review that, “Huawei has been making smartphones for years but nothing has grabbed our attention quite like the P20 Pro.

“This flagship easily keeps pace with the competition and in many ways, it actually outclasses its rivals.

“The triple camera is fabulous, it looks great and that battery life is so impressive other manufacturers should be embarrassed about their lacklustre performance.

“If Huawei was trying to make everyone sit up and take notice it’s certainly achieved that.”

However, despite there being plenty of reasons to switch to a P20 Pro there is one problem that means it simply can’t compete with Apple’s iPhone.

Recent figures published by mobile trade-in site, musicMagpie, has revealed how much consumers can get if they want to sell their current phones.

According to the sats, the P20 Pro is now worth £280 when trading it in.

That may not sound too bad until you compare it to Apple’s iPhone.

musicMagpie says that it is currently offering £310 for the iPhone 8 and £460 for the iPhone X which both launched in 2017 – a number of months before the P20 Pro.

To make matters worse for Huawei, Samsung’s Galaxy S9, which also went on sale before its Pro, is also holding its value better with a current price of £300.

Here are some of the latest phone values

iPhone X 256GB – value £510 • iPhone X 64GB – value £460 • iPhone 8 64GB – Value £310 • Samsung Galaxy S9 – Value £300 • Huawei P20 Pro – value £280 • Galaxy S8 – value £220

Speaking about the research, Liam Howley, Chief Marketing Officer at musicMagpie, said: “While cars typically lose approximately 20% when driven off the lot, technology items can lose up to an average of 65% once they are taken out of the box, depending on the brand.

“It’s well documented in our bi-annual depreciation studies that iPhones hold their value better.”

It’s worth noting that Huawei looks set to announce a big refresh to its P20 Pro phone in the coming months which could see this curreny flagship drop further in value.

There’s no word on when or what will be included on the P30 Pro but it could feature more power under the hood and get wireless charging – something that was sadly missing on the P20 Pro.

Expect more news on this update in March.
