Teaser trailer rumours have been cropping up left, right and centre for months now – despite counter-arguments that we’re unlikely to get any new footage this side of April’s Star Wars Celebration event. But this new report is picking up some serious traction, getting fans a little more on-edge than usual. Are we really about to get a teaser – and, presumably, a title reveal – any moment now?
A source told Fantha Tracks: “A major UK cinema chain has received a Digital Cinema Package (DCP) from Disney this morning called TT1-SW9, (Teaser Trailer 1 Star Wars 9).
“It’s encrypted with a KDM (Key Delivery Message) so they can’t view the contents until they get the key.
“No news on when they’ll get the key, but they had the Aladdin trailer DCP for two weeks before it came out on Monday… therefore, Friday might be the day, but that’s pure speculation.”
What’s got the fanbase especially excited is the fact that the claim has been shared on Twitter by Making Star Wars boss Jason Ward – who is traditionally a go-to for trusted Star Wars leaks and rumours.
Of course, this is still to be taken with an enormous pinch of salt, but it would also tie-in with the cryptic tweets Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) has been sharing.
“How strange. I am receiving images of something amazing coming towards us – travelling over decades through space and time – reaching out to all humans on this planet with its message. What could it be? Should I be afraid? Should you? Stay tuned,” he posted on February 4.
This has been followed every few days since by more incompressible teases.
Earlier this week he tweeted: “… signal’s feint… but now more… bright stars… because PALEIO.. fading… N… fading… could be on the pa…. to the answ…. fading…. Have to update system. Will this never end…. ROBOT… ERROR… should read… REBOOT… PAL…is your only ho… fading … kno….”
It’s not clear where Star Wars 9 is exactly in terms of its filming schedule, but it’s almost definitely near its end: multiple stars, Daniels included, have been posting online recently about how they have completed filming.
But newcomer Naomi Ackie, speaking just last weekend, appeared to speak about her “filming” in the present tense.
The title of the new film is also a mystery – with Ackie and fellow newcomer Dominic Monaghan hinting that only JJ Abrams knows what it is.
Star Wars: Episode 9 is out in December.
