Munich station in bomb alert: Police swoop on object close to Munich Security Conference

The Federal Police of Bavaria closed platforms 22 and 23 in the city’s main station, less than a mile from the venue hosting the Munich Security Conference. In a tweet the police said: “On track 23 of the Central Station, Munich for the Federal Police’s Special forces to examine an object. “That’s why platforms 22/23 currently blocked.” The incident happened just before 3pm GMT.

 

Crowds of people were seen behind held back by police who cordoned off the area with police tape.

The news comes after hundreds of high profile people flocked to the city to attend a security conference.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is in attendance along with Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, Egyptian President Abd al-Fattah as-Sisi, Yang Jiechi, Member of the 19th Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, as well as the Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroschenko, the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina Wajed, and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini is also in attendance.

The group have met discuss the future of the EU’s defence.
