The Umbrella Academy: Luther actor Tom Hopper reveals argument over character ‘death’

The Umbrella Academy viewers were given a brutal few scenes towards the end of the season as Allison Hargreeves (played by Emmy Raver-Lampman) was left in a harrowing situation.

After a vicious argument and subsequent fight with Vanya (Ellen Page) Allison is left with a gruesome gash to her throat.

Luckily, her family arrive in the nick of time to save her.

However before they realise she is alive, the entire Umbrella Academy fall to their knees and grieve for their sister.

Hurt most of all was her adopted brother and secret admirer Luther Hargreeves (Tom Hopper).

Luther spent most of the show up until this moment tiptoeing around the subject of his feelings, and reluctantly avoiding a discussion surrounding their formative years.

Express.co.uk recently caught up with Luther actor Tom, who revealed what went on behind the scenes during that jaw-dropping revelation.

Tom enthusiastically explained: “It was tricky because we were directed in that scene to make sure we had to believe Allison was dead at the end of that episode.

“There was an argument there to say: ‘Why are we not just grabbing her and taking her out?’

“But we needed to see the love, the absolute grief – he’s [Luther’s] going to lose Allison.

“And also that cliffhanger moment, that: ‘Oh my god she’s dead!’”

Tom went on to add: “So I just played the absolute truth – that I thought she was dead, she’s gone.

“And for Luther, he confesses it in episode ten that he’s got this absolute unrelenting love for Allison that he always has had, it comes out through multiple times in the show.”

The episode which contains Allison’s downfall sees Luther going through the toughest time in the series.

And it is his actions that eventually lead him to try to bring Vanya down in the final moments of the show.

But as the new couple are in a rough position during the final moments of the show, will they be able to reform their relationship in a potential second season?

Meanwhile Hazel actor Cameron Britton also spoke to Express.co.uk where he revealed a shocking fact about Number Five (Aiden Gallagher).

Although the young assassin saw a lot of fighting, it turns out the actor was not allowed near guns of any kind.

Cameron explained that because of the child labour laws in place, Aiden was not able to go near any of the buildings included in the shootouts.

The Umbrella Academy is available on Netflix.
