BBC News: ‘I'm shaking' Viewers in turmoil over Carol Kirkwood’s 'brave' performance

Carol Kirkwood was presenting the weather today from stop the London Coliseum, which is the home of the English National Opera.

As part of a pre-recorded segment on BBC Breakfast, Carol had formerly been there to watch La Boheme by Puccini as she found out how the industry was trying to get new talent into the art form.

Stuart Murphy, CEO of the English National Opera, set Carol the big challenge via Twitter and there was some doubt over whether she would perform or not.

He wrote: “@BBCNaga @BBCBreakfast if you manage to get @carolkirkwood to sing from the roof, we’ll light up the building and the coliseum ball bright red for Comic Relief night.”

It looked as though Carol wasn’t too keen at first as she replied: “WHAT?!!! Have you heard me sing Stuart?!!!! xxx.”

To which he responded: “Hahaha. Comic Relief needs that howling!”

But good-sport Carol took one for the team and did end up give those at home a little tune.

From the tower, Carol sang a few lines of Lionel Richie’s song Hello, before quickly decrying her own performance.

She sang: “Hello, is it me you’re looking for? I can see it in your eyes, I can see it in your smile’ – enough, I can’t sing!

“I’ve never said I could sing! That was horrendous.”

After Carol had done her weather bit, she added: “I’m still shaking from having done that singing!”

Those watching the programme at home were quick to congratulate the weatherwoman on Twitter for her rendition and her charitable efforts.

“Well done Carol you nailed it, it takes some guts to sing on live tv!” one exclaimed.

Another added: “@BBCBreakfast Carol did an amazing job with her singing!”

“Loads better than I could’ve done it, well done you,” a third opined.

A fourth shared: “@BBCBreakfast @carolkirkwood Well Done Carol for singing over the top of London. Fantastic views. Visited the Coliseum last year to see Chess. The dome will look great all in Red on Comic Relief day.”

“@carolkirkwood @BBCNaga @BBCBreakfast that was brave and brilliant, Well Done Carol,” a fifth declared.

Back in the Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt read out some of the statements of those praising Carol.

“Well done Carol, thank you!” Naga said to her co-host.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
