Barbara Windsor's spouse reveals how she returned to EastEnders after Alzheimer's news

Dame Barbara Windsor, 81, went public with her Alzheimer’s disease battle last year, but she had actually been diagnosed four years before that.

The EastEnders legend was able to return to her role in the BBC soap as Peggy Mitchell for the final time and her husband Scott Mitchell, 56, has now revealed getting it was largely due to getting medical help early.

Speaking to The Mirror, he said: “Having Barbara diagnosed early was a positive move and allowed us to adjust to her condition…

“And, in my opinion, gave her an extra two years of being able to continue working and appearances in EastEnders which were normality to her and to live life as fully as possible.”

He has now urged families to not ignore the warning signs because getting help early on is crucial to supporting individuals with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

He told the publication: “So this Valentine’s Day, I’m urging you all to support a loved one if they are acting out of character and if you’re worried, gently suggest they visit their GP and receive the care and support they deserve.”

The symptoms of Alzheimer’s varies but is mainly associated with memory loss and the ongoing decline of brain functioning, according to the NHS website.

The disease mainly affects people over 65 but there are instances where the signs can develop earlier.

The NHS advise people to look out for the most common signs which include mood swings, poor concentration and difficulties carrying out daily activities.

Meanwhile, the Carry On legend’s husband previously spoke with Express.co.uk and revealed the struggles Dame Barbara has faced since battling Alzheimer’s.

Scott said: “I can’t leave Barbara by herself anymore. Life has changed drastically for her and of course that reflects on our whole life together. It’s really been overwhelming.

“[At the time] Barbara wasn’t really talking about it or accepting it which is a common thing for people living with Alzheimers.”

He continued: “Friends have been just incredible. Lots of people visit the house, they come round. She feels she’s not forgotten.

“She does spend a lot of time at home. You can feel quite alone, I guess.”

Scott is currently preparing to join Dame Barbara’s former EastEnders co-stars for the London Marathon in support of their dementia campaign.

Stars including Jake Wood, Adam Woodyatt and Natalie Cassidy are among those taking part to raise money for their campaign, the Dementia Revolution.

They plan to raise £100,000 to help fund the ground-breaking research into dementia, as well as raising awareness of the condition.

Speaking about taking part in the marathon, EastEnders actor told Express.co.uk: “Just giving support to both Barbara and Scott. For the charity as well.

“That’s what’s motivating us all. That’ll be driving us forward on the day I’m sure.”
