What Man Utd stars Smalling, Fred and Pereira did to fans before PSG Champions League game

Manchester United trio Smalling, Fred and Pereira were left out of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s matchday squad for tonight’s Champions League clash with PSG.

Smalling only recently returned from injury against Fulham on Saturday and, tonight, Solskjaer has gone for Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof at the back.

Fred, meanwhile, appears to be a £52million misfit.

The Manchester United midfielder has struggled since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk back during the summer transfer window.

And Pereira has also endured a rocky campaign.

The Brazilian impressed during a loan spell at Valencia last season and many were expecting great things of him this season.

But he too has failed to catch the eye and, as a result, misses the biggest game of Solskjaer’s United tenure so far.

Given their omissions, the trio could be forgiven for sulking.

But all three men kindly gestured at United fans as they took their place in the stands for the PSG showdown.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer has explained the thinking behind his United line-up for tonight.

He said: “We know Anthony’s [Martial] quality going forward and hope he’s going to create chances for us from the left-hand side and show us what he can do.

“We have to be clinical, of course, and it’s important we get to Paris with a chance to go through.”

Solskjaer also revealed why Bailly and Lindelof were chosen together.

The duo rarely played during Jose Mourinho’s time in charge.

And the United interim manager said: “They’ve done well together in a few games.

“Of course, against [Kylian] Mbappe, they need to be on top of their game.”
