Liverpool fans will LOVE what Virgil van Dijk did after 87 minutes against Bournemouth

Most sides could be forgiven for taking it easy but not Liverpool – and not Virgil van Dijk.

Instead of letting the game drift to a conclusion against Bournemouth, Van Dijk saw a chance to get on the scoresheet alongside yet another cleansheet.

Cue him running the whole length of the pitch to partner Roberto Firmino in a stunning late counter-attack.

With 87 minutes on the clock, the Dutchman saw the Cherries short at the back so he sprinted forward in search of goal number four.

Liverpool broke down the left through Andy Robertson, who played in Roberto Firmino. On his right shoulder was Van Dijk who kept pace and, crucially, kept himself onside.

As Firmino bore down on goal, a simply pass to his right would have given Van Dijk the chance to slide into an almost unguarded net.

Except Firmino tried to do it all alone only for his tame shot to be easily saved.

Van Dijk threw his arms up in the air in frustration that his running went unrewarded while fans rushed to Twitter to agree with their £75million hero.

“That was Selfish by Firmino,Van Dijk was all alone,” wrote one.

“Firmino man why didnt u pass so VanDijk can put his size 12 through that ball ahahaha,” asked another.

One fan had their finger firmly on the Caps lock button as they wrote: “Just watched the highlights and VAN DIJK WAS RUNNING ALONGSIDE FIRMINO ON A COUNTER. DUDE. I can’t love that guy more. And yes it should’ve been like 7-0.”

A fellow supporter fumed: “PASS TO VAN DIJK YOU LOST CASE FIRMINO FFS.”

Still, Liverpool cruised back to the top of the Premier League win a win described as ‘mesmerising’ by James Milner.

It put them three points clear of Manchester City thanks to goals from Sadio Mane, Gigi Wijnaldum and Mo Salah.

“Some of the play was mesmerising and we could have scored more,” said skipper James Milner. ‘We’re very lucky with the squad we have, the movement, link-up and understanding.

“The crowd was immense. There’s not many better in the country when it is like that – it’s like a 12th man.”

A jittery Liverpool had drawn their two previous games – so this victory was just what manager Jurgen Klopp had been demanding from his team.

He said: “We want to play convincing football and that’s what we did. It was a very good sign today. We were creative. We had power and speed and we had some outstanding performances.

“All the goals were brilliant and the third was world class. Today we won in an impressive manner.”
