Dan Walker: 'Hopefully BBC will have me back' Breakfast host speaks out on absence

Dan Walker, 41, announced last month he would be taking on the incredible challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with other celebrities to raise money for Comic Relief.

The star will be absent from BBC Breakfast for a week as he climbs the 5,895 metre mountain.

However, one fan on Twitter asked Dan if he was leaving the programme for good after being left stumped by a pub quiz question.

The confused Twitter follower wrote to the host: “@mrdanwalker Pub Quiz question last night we were flummoxed by.

“Which member of the BBC Breakfast team announced on air last week he was leaving the show?

“Discovered the answer was Dan Walker. Did we miss the announcement last week? #wronganswer? #emberinns.”

Dan explained he will be taking time out to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, but joked he hopes he will be asked back by the BBC.

The star replied: “Ha You need an extra point! I’m off for a week to climb Kilimanjaro for @comicrelief.”

Dan added: “Hopefully @BBCBreakfast will have me back… unless there’s something I don’t know about.”

Later on, Dan gave his Twitter followers an update about his preparations to tackle the African mountain.

The presenter revealed he has had an “altitude session” ahead of his gruelling challenge.

Alongside a series of images, Dan wrote: “Just finished my first altitude session for our Kilimanjaro climb with @comicrelief.

“Body feels like I’ve run 10k in about 7 minutes… so tired.”

“Much tougher than I thought,” he said. “Thanks to Chris at @thinAirsport in Middleton #ReturnToKili.”

Dan will join a host of celebrities including Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas, Little Mix singers Jade Thirwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock plus Love Island winner Dani Dyer on the eight-day trek.

Their tough challenge comes 10 years after a group of celebrities first tackled the climb.

The 2009 trek included the likes of Cheryl, Gary Barlow and Alesha Dixon, who raised a staggering £3.5 million for the charity.

Comic Relief: Red Nose Day returns to BBC One March 15.

BBC Breakfast airs tomorrow on BBC One at 6am.
