Ariana Grande album: Who was Mac Miller? Why is Ghostin so important to Ariana Grande?

Ariana Grande’s most anticipated album ‘Thank u, Next’ was released today, after months of intense buildup and excitement from fans. The album is Ariana Grande’s latest studio recording and the most recent since her split from ex-fiancee Pete Davidson and the death of her boyfriend Mac Miller. Ariana has included a number of references in the album to both of the important men in her life and in the song Ghostin’, there is particular significance which has sent fans into a frenzy.

Who was Mac Miller?

Mac Miller – otherwise known as Malcolm James McCormick – was an American singer and rapper.

The musician had been active in the industry from a young age, starting out in 2007 at the age of 15.

He exploded into prominence with his first studio album Blue Slide Park in 2011, which hit number one on the Billboard top 200 album ranking.

Miller was forthright about his substance abuse and mental health problems during his career, regularly working the two issues into his songs.

Ariana Grande and Mac Miller were together for two years, from August 2016 to May 2018.

The rapper died just months after they broke up on September 7.

Miller was killed by a lethal overdose of dangerous opioid fentanyl with alcohol and cocaine according to the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office, and his death profoundly affected Ariana Grande.

She was notably distraught and has included her feelings about Miller in the track Ghostin’.

Why is Ghostin’ so important to Ariana Grande?

Ghostin’ is a highly complex song and addresses some of the intense love and pain Grande has experienced with her romantic partners.

While there are tributes to both Pete Davidson and Mac Miller included in the song, one reference to Mac Miller, in Particular, has been deemed particularly important.

Ariana Grande revealed the significance in a tweet earlier this year before the album was released.

One fan asked the singer via Twitter what Ghostin’ was about and Grande replied.

She said: “It’s about feeling badly for the person you’re with because you love somebody else.

“Feeling badly because he can tell he can’t compare… and how I should be ghosting him.”

Fans believe the person Ariana felt she should be ‘ghosting’ (not talking to) is ex-fiancee Pete Davidson and the person she really loves is Mac Miller.
