State of the Union: ‘We must prepare for a TREMENDOUS ONSLAUGHT’ more troops go to border

In his delayed speech, Trump announced that he had sent a further 3,750 troops to the southern border in order to protect the US from the “tremendous onslaught” on their border. In his contentious speech, Trump implored Congress to pass a bill that would help secure the “very dangerous” southern border. In one of his key points to his speech, Trump asked Republicans and Democrats to confront an urgent national crisis and fund his border wall.

He said: “Now is the time for Congress to show the world that America is committed to ending illegal immigration and putting the ruthless coyotes, cartels, drug dealers and human traffickers out of business.”

The US President also insisted that large organised so-called caravans of people are “on the march” to the US much to the groans of the Democrats.

He also added that Mexican cities are trying to remove the illegal immigrants from their communities are using trucks and buses to send them to vulnerable points in the US border.

He said: “This is a moral issue. The lawless state of our southern border is a threat to the safety, security and financial wellbeing of all America.

“We have a moral duty to create an immigration system that protects the lives and jobs our citizens.

“This includes our obligation to the millions of immigrants living here today who followed the rules and respected our laws.

“Legal immigrants enrich our nation and strengthen our society in countless ways.”

Trump insisted that he wanted people to come into the country but that they must do it “legally”.

Trump also added that the issue of immigration represents the biggest divide between America’s working-class and its political class.

The border wall was one of Trump’s key policies when he entered the White House.

He has, however, struggled to capture the funding needed to create the border wall due as the Democrats have blocked his attempts to obtain the funding needed.

The US government shutdown centred around the disagreement between the Republicans and Democrats over border security.

It turned out to be the longest in US history as the government remained closed for 35 days.
