Morelos red card: What happened to Rangers star in Aberdeen battle? Steven Gerrard reacts

Rangers and Aberdeen played out a classic at Pittodrie, which ended 4-2 to the visitors.

The Scottish Premiership title rivals had both played their part in the firecracker of a match.

Morelos had scored twice for Rangers, who led 3-2 early in the second half.

But just before the hour mark tensions spilled over.

Morelos and Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna clashed in the home box.

McKenna had cleared the ball and, as he fell, Morelos appeared to stamp on the 22-year-old.

McKenna, still on his back, kicked out at the Colombian forward and appeared to catch him in the face with his boot.

Morelos immediately hit the deck as referee Bobby Madden brandished the red card to McKenna.

But the drama was not done there.

Dons players surrounded the ref and linesman in protest to Morelos’ actions.

It appeared at first as though Rangers star Morelos would get away with his involvement in the tussle.

But after he received treatment for the kick to the face he was shown his marching orders.

Rangers eventually won the match 4-2 as Jermain Defoe scored deep into stoppage time.

And manager Steven Gerrard refused to be drawn on the incident after the game.

“Obviously I’m delighted the win. I thought we stood up to them and matched them on the basics very well. We took our goals ever so well,” he said.

“Morelos’ finishes are top drawer and that’s the reason we love him so much.

“In terms of the incidents I haven’t seen them to comment on.

“I can’t even comment to say Scott McKenna deserves a red because I haven’t had a chance to see it.”

Former Rangers star Gordon Smith also discussed Morelos on Sportsound.

“The red cards were right. Morelos follows through with his foot and McKenna has reacted,” he said.

“He’s caught him, I think, and Morelos has made the most of it. He had one eye on the ref as he was writhing about.

“Why does he have to get involved? He’s a liability in that respect.

“Rangers have got to deal with it. He needs help with the behavioural side of his game.”

The win moved Gers five points clear of third-place Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership table.

But Celtic’s 2-0 win at Hibs tonight means their lead over the Ibrox club remains six points.

Amazingly, it is the third time Morelos has been sent off against Aberdeen this season.

He was red carded in the 1-1 Premiership draw at Pittodrie back in August.

Morelos was then dismissed as Rangers lost 1-0 to the Dons before Christmas.

He was also given his marching orders in a Europa League clash at FC Ufa.

This season Morelos has picked up an eye-watering 15 yellow cards from 39 appearances.

There was talk of a transfer away from the club in January after Rangers signed Jermain Defoe from Bournemouth.

But manager Steven Gerrard was adamant in his reluctance to sell the striker to Nice, despite the Ligue 1 side offering £8m.
