Coronation Street spoilers: ITV viewers OUTRAGED as soap sparks 'sexist' row

Nick Tilsley (played by Ben Price) and David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) angered Coronation Street viewers when they looked to be “objectifying women” in last night’s episode of the ITV soap.

The siblings, who joined forces to open a new barbershop in Weatherfield, were discussing employees in a local cafe when they made some ghastly remarks about female barbers.

As they chatted about their new business venture, the pair decided they needed a “complete stunner” to bring in customers.

On the hunt for a “drop dead gorgeous” women, the twosome considered advertising for an attractive woman to interview for the role.

But the pair quickly realised what they wanted to do was illegal, so Nick suggested they headhunt the ideal employee.

The ex-husband of Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) insisted they find someone with the exact image they were looking for.

Seemingly agreeing with his older brother, David asked: “What’s that? Blonde hair and a big rack?”

With a smirk, Nick replied: “No she doesn’t have to have blonde hair,” before the men burst into a fit of laughter.

After, he added: “I can’t help if men are shallow. If we’re going to run a business we have to give them what they want.”

Their comments riled some viewers watching a home, with many taking to Twitter to express their “disgust” about the remarks.

One person wrote: “I can’t believe Nick and David were basically objectifying women. What about gender equality?”

Another fan tweeted: “Seriously could Nick and David literally be anymore totally sexist?”

A third commentator added: “Bit sexist there Nick,” while another groaned: “Nick is p***ing me off, Corrie.”

Someone else asked: “Why are David and Nick being so disgusting all of a sudden?” as a fifth said: “Yeah, Nick is actually disgusting.”

Meanwhile, another viewer demanded: “Stop Nick’s sleazy plan of only hiring women for the new barber shop based on their appearance!”

Other viewers discussed Liz McDonald’s (Beverley Callard) exit from the ITV soap, after the former Rovers landlady was seen boarding a plane.

She was due to appear in court for Johnny and Jenny Connor’s trial, but decided not to go after speaking to Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and Rita Tanner (Barbara Knox).

While on the aircraft, Liz told her son Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) she would be munching on tapas very soon, although she did not reveal her destination.

Liz’s unexpected exit concerned fans of the show, with one viewer tweeting: “I wasn’t expecting this, I really thought Liz had been kidnapped! I wonder how long she’ll be away for this time?”

A second fan said: “Where’s Liz going then!? Missed that. Going to see Andy is she!? #corrie how long for?”

Coronation Street continues on ITV on Friday at 7:30pm and 8:30pm.
