Vikings season 6 spoilers: 'Coming soon' Lagertha star teases early return date for finale

Lagertha (played by Katheryn Winnick) will return for the 20 episode sixth and final season which will see the Vikings prepare and fight in battle once more.

The fifth season only ended last week, but fans of the History Channel show can’t wait to see the historic characters return to their screens.

However, fans would’ve been disappointed to learn the series, streamed on Amazon Prime, wouldn’t return until next year.

Fans are likely to be on the edge of their seats as Lagertha star Katheryn Winnick, 41, has shared a clip of the show’s opening titles to her three million followers.

The clip shows the actress focussing on her laptop screen with the opening titles rolling and the credit “Directed by Katheryn Winnick” zoomed in on.

In the clip, the caption “Coming soon #Director #Vikings” is made visible, with the musical intro heard playing in the background.

Previously, the first episode of seasons four and five haven’t aired until November, with fans expecting to wait over a year and a half until the next instalment.

For season one, two and three however, the first episodes of each season aired in early spring around February or March.

However, with Katheryn’s latest post, Vikings season six could return earlier next year or in a shock twist, the season could air this November.

Katheryn’s teaser comes after she shared a short preview of what’s to come in the upcoming season, with the clip ending of a voiceover saying: “Vikings season six, coming soon.”

Could this also be another hint viewers could be tuning in to the final season earlier than expected?

Lagertha faced a turbulent struggle to the end of season five as she was kidnapped by Harald (Peter Franzén) but was later freed.

Following the final episode, fans took to social media to theorise what Lagertha’s next move could be in her plans for Wessex.

One fan wrote on Instagram: “Lagertha and Bjorn will kill Ivar.”

Another commented: “You’re a strong woman and will kill Ivar,” referring to a post on Katheryn’s Instagram page.

However, following the end of Vikings, creator Michael Hirst has spoken out on the possible spin-off to the series based on factual historic events.

Addressing the show would not be a spin-off as such, Michael told Variety: “We’re talking about a continuation series, which I’m still going to be very involved with.

“Jeb Stuart is the other writer, and it is exciting, but my main focus was on my characters.

“I have to say that they’re not characters to me. I write so much about them, I’ve lived with them for seven years,” the creator continued.

With another writer possibly continuing the story, will fans of Vikings continue to support the Vikings saga?

Vikings season 5 is available to stream now on Amazon Prime and season six will air in 2020.
