Titanfall 3 cancelled? Apex Legends dev gives PS4 and Xbox update

Titanfall 3 will not be the next game released by Respawn Entertainment, that much we can now be certain of.

It was reported that a new instalment in the franchise was in development back in 2017 and was not linked to a Battle Royale formula.

However, following the announcement of Apex Legends on PS4, Xbox One and PC, those Titanfall 3 plans appear to have been pushed back or cancelled.

Apex Legends is now the next instalment in the Titanfall franchise and is going to be the focus of Respawn Entertainment for some time.

The development team talked about supporting the game for years to come during this week’s big reveal.

And with other major projects in the works for Star Wars and VR, it appears the studio has its hands full.

So is there any hope of Titanfall 3 dropping in the future on consoles and PC?

Lead producer Drew McCoy confirmed that they are not working on Titanfall 3, which may come as a big disappointment to fans.

Speaking to Eurogamer, McCoy spoke on the subject of the new Battle Royale game’s secret launch and release, revealing:

“Our desire is to be completely open and transparent with our player base, and part of that expands to how we talk about problems, and we understand this game is gonna have a sceptical audience,” McCoy told me.

“There are some people who think there are too many battle royale games or it’s a fad, the world thinks we’re making Titanfall 3 and we’re not – this is what we’re making.

“To try and convince a sceptical audience for months with trailers and hands-on articles, we’re just like ‘let the game speak for itself’ – it’s the most powerful antidote to potential problems.

“We’re doing a free to play game, with essentially loot boxes, after we were bought by EA, and it’s not Titanfall 3.

“It’s the perfect recipe for a marketing plan to go awry, so why have that – let’s just ship the game and let players play.”

And here’s Kotaku news editor Jason Schreier reacting to the news on the subject of Titanfall 3 and what he knew of its apparent development:

“It’s one hell of a revelation, as we learned that Titanfall 3 was indeed in development during the fall of 2017, when publisher Electronic Arts purchased Respawn for many millions of dollars.

“At the time, as I reported this past Saturday, a source told me that the third Titanfall was underway and that the studio was looking to get it out as quickly as possible, for fear of it looking and feeling dated if it came out too much later than 2018 (thanks to its use of the Valve-created Source engine).

“I speculated that either A) this was a stopgap en route to a proper Titanfall 3 or B) whatever work was done on Titanfall 3 has become Apex Legends. The answer, it appears, is B.”

Apex Legends is out now on PS4, Xbox One and PC, with the potential for it to be expanded to mobile platforms and Nintendo Switch in the future.
