Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett ignoring Paul Merson advice ahead of QPR FA Cup clash

Portsmouth boss Jackett takes his side to QPR tonight aiming to spring another FA Cup surprise.

Pompey, who famously won the competition in 2008 during Harry Redknapp’s time in charge, have already battled their way past Norwich en route to the fourth round.

Portsmouth managed to hold Championship outfit QPR to a 1-1 draw in the first leg – despite Paul Merson advising them to focus on securing promotion.

Prior to that game, Merson said: “I think Portsmouth need to get out of this competition.

“Get out of the cup and get in the Championship would be my advice.”

But Jackett is eager to steer his side through to the fifth round, where Premier League giants Watford lie in wait.

“Yeah and we’ve had a good run in the cup so far,” he said when asked if he was hoping for a famous night at Loftus Road.

“We’ve come through some tricky rounds early on. Norwich away and QPR at home.

“We want to continue our cup run if we can.

“We’ve done well in the competition so far to maintain that and keep going through.

“On a personal level it’s my hometown club, I’d love to take the boys to Watford.”

QPR boss Steve McClaren, meanwhile, is loving the Hoops’ FA Cup run so far.

“I like the buzz that has been created and that is why I put great significance on the first game,” McClaren told the club’s official website.

“We had to get a result and make sure we got in the hat.

“We did that and that has given the winners Watford at home which is an extra incentive to play for. We’ve none more so than to win.

“We want to go through in the Cup. As much for the supporters than anything, it’s going to be a great atmosphere with plenty of fans.

“It’s again what I called before the first match, a real cup tie and one which will test our players to the end.

“It’s going to be a cracking game and we have to make sure we play a major part in that and get the result.”
