Liam Neeson: What is a cosh? Liam Neeson in staggering revelation but what is a cosh?

Liam Neeson, 66, revealed how he sought revenge after a close friend told him she had been raped. The Taken actor said he took to the streets with a weapon as he tried to hunt down the culprit. He now admits he is “ashamed” of his past but the revelation has sparked a backlash online. And many have asked – what is a cosh?

What did Liam Neeson say?

Speaking to The Independent during the press junket for his new film Cold Pursuit, he said: “There’s something primal – God forbid you’ve ever had a member of your family hurt under criminal conditions.

“I’ll tell you a story. This is true.”

He continued: ”She handled the situation of the rape in the most extraordinary way.

“But my immediate reaction was I asked, did she know who it was? No. What colour were they? She said it was a black person.”

He went on: ”I went up and down areas with a cosh, hoping I’d be… approached by somebody.

“I’m ashamed to say that, and I did it for maybe a week – hoping some [Liam gestured air quotes with his fingers] ‘black b******’ would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know? So that I could kill him.”

What is a cosh?

A cosh is a thick, heavy stick or bar which is used as a weapon.

According to Collins Dictionary, the bar or rod is often made of rubber or metal.

The term is believed to be of mid 19th century origin – although it is unknown when or where the term was first coined.

Neeson added it took him about a week to process what had happened, revealing this was the first time he had ever admitted what he did.

He said: “It was horrible, horrible, when I think back, that I did that.

“And I’ve never admitted that, and I’m saying it to a journalist. God forbid.

“It’s awful. But I did learn a lesson from it, when I eventually thought, ‘What the fuck are you doing’, you know?

“I understand that need for revenge, but it just leads to more revenge, to more killing and more killing.”
