eBay rare coin: 'Rare' 50p Battle of Hastings coin listed for £1,000 – why is it special?

The Battle of Hastings depicted on a 50 pence piece could attract more than £1,000 for one eBay seller. A user on the online auction site has listed the historically inspired coin, based on the 1066 battle, on the website for a Buy It Now price of £1,025. They are also accepting any other offers for the 2016 design, with a mintage of 6,700,000. The coin, which is decorated in a striking black design, comes complete with its own plastic casing.

It depicts a soldier wielding a weapon and the date of the iconic moment in history.

User marston59 describes the coin as “rare” and has lasted it for 29 more days, meaning the auction finishes on March 5.

They have a 100 per cent feedback rating.

In an attempt to reassure users of they coin’s authenticity, they wrote underneath the listing how it “has been graded accurately and professionally”.

They added: “The sonically sealed solid plastic slab is individually numbered so that the details of the coin(s) can be verified on a central database, and is also tamperproof.

“In addition, the coin is protected from handling and keeps the coin’s condition and finish long term if looked after which can be detrimental to the value once sold.”

The Battle of Hastings was fought on the 14th October 1066 between the French army led by Duke William II and the English army led by King Harold.

King Harold II was defeated by William the Conqueror which led to the collapse of the English army.

William was crowned as the first Norman King, a crucial moment in medieval history and the reverse of this particular coin was designed by John Bergdahl, and inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry.

It is advised coin collectors seek the advice of experts before forking out huge amounts for rare items such as this.

While these special edition coins are generally worth their face value of 50p, its rarity makes it worth slightly more.

On website Change Checker’s scarcity index, it lists the coin as number one, meaning it is common.

This suggests the Buy It Now price of more than £1,000 is rather steep.

Last month, a different eBay seller asked for an even greater fee for the same coin.

Listed by seller uk2014-sinno, who has a 100 percent positive feedback rating, the coin is up for a staggering amount of £1,800 and is described as “rare”.

In the description of the auction they’ve simply written: “A rare 50p coin in very good condition.”
