Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp reveals alarming news in title race boost for Man City

The England international has been absent since sustaining a leg fracture when going in for a challenge with Ben Mee in a 3-1 win over Burnley on December 5.

The initial timeline on the injury expected to see the Reds welcome Gomez back to the fold after around six weeks.

But nearly two months on, Gomez is still some distance from a return to full fitness.

Ahead of Liverpool’s trip to West Ham on Monday night (8pm), Klopp revealed the defender was unlikely to return any time before Liverpool’s February 19 clash with Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Klopp has had to deal with a succession of injuries in defence that has forced him to use Fabinho as a centre-back and James Milner and Jordan Henderson as emergency right-backs in recent games.

The Merseyside outfit’s stubborn defence has been hailed as a key reason for their success this season.

But though Klopp’s charges are five points clear atop the Premier League table, they missed a chance to build a seven-point gap between themselves and title rivals Manchester City as they seek a first championship since 1990, drawing 1-1 with Leicester.

The Reds were opened up on several occasions by the Foxes, who might have come away from Anfield with all three points had they been more clinical, after Liverpool had also conceded three in their previous home game – a 4-3 win over Crystal Palace.

The four goals they conceded in those two games was as many as they had conceded in the last 16 league matches on home soil combined, a run stretching back to last February.

Liverpool appear to be missing the consistency of their first-choice back-four in the absences of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Gomez, who had been one of the club’s stand-out performers alongside Virgil van Dijk before his injury.

And in a worrying update for Liverpool fans, Klopp has acknowledged there are concerns over the state of the broken bone Gomez suffered – which could even require the 21-year-old to undergo surgery.

The German coach admitted when asked about a medical procedure: “I don’t know. We will see. It is possible, probably.

“It is not exactly going how we want, that’s how it is. He needs more time. We will see exactly how we do it.

“There were different moments when we thought we could do this or that. It will take time. We can not say more.”

Dejan Lovren, meanwhile, is still sidelined by a hamstring injury he suffered early into an FA Cup loss at Wolves in early January.

The Croatian is expected to miss out against the Hammers, while Milner should return from a one-game suspension to return at right-back with Alexander-Arnold still recovering from a knee injury.

Liverpool loaned out senior their other natural right-back, Nathaniel Clyne, to Bournemouth in the January transfer window.
