Groundhog Day 2019 in pictures: Best pictures of Happy Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day celebrations took place today at Gobbler’s Knob in Pennsylvania, including live music performances and fireworks. Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2 every year at sunrise, which was 7.26am EST (12.26pm GMT) today. Some members of the crowd had stayed up all night to make sure they had the best view of Phil.

What did Phil predict?

The groundhog emerged from his burrow as the crowds chanted fro him to wake up.

Phil chose a scroll which said: “Predicting the weather, that’s my song, for 133 years I’ve never been wrong.

“So is it early spring or more winter forecast stop the music here is my forecast.”

As the groundhog did not see his own shadow, the US is said to be now heading for an early spring.

If Phil had seen his shadow, this would have meant there would be at least six more weeks of winter.

Who is Punxsutawney Phil?

The groundhog weighs about 20 pounds and is 22 inches long.

He lives in Western Pennsylvania, around 80 miles north-east of Pittsburgh and wakes up from a deep sleep every year.

Punxsutawney is a town with a population of just under 6,000 people in Jefferson County, about one and a half hours northeast of Pittsburgh.

The first Groundhog event was officially held in 1887.

The day was first written about in the Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper a year earlier in 1886.
