Outlander season 5 spoilers: Stephen Bonnet return storyline exposed in epic kidnap twist?

This article contains potential spoilers for Outlander season 5.

Stephen Bonnet (played by Ed Speleers) is one of the most evil characters to grace the world of Outlander since the days of Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies).

Brianna Randall Fraser (Sophie Skelton) was raped and traumatised by the Irish pirate, and left wondering if her baby was either his or her handfast husband Roger MacKenzie’s (Richard Rankin).

And while Roger returned to his love in heart wrenching scenes in the finale, fans know there is plenty more drama and heartbreak ahead when the STARZ time-travelling tale picks up again.

What’s more, Brianna’s biological father Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) is still eager to have a confrontation with Stephen, where he will undoubtedly seek justice for the now mother-of-one.

Fans of Diana Gabaldon’s original book series already have a sense of how Stephen will return, but will the show stick closely to the same plot?

The pirate was last seen handcuffed in a Wilmington prison, ready to be hanged for committing murder.

Brianna managed to get a tiny thread of closure from the man who raped her, but everything fell apart when Fergus (Cesar Domboy) came to rescue Murtagh Fizgibbons (Duncan Lacroix).

The building was engulfed in flames as a fire swept through the prison, and the two men grasped Brianna and ran.

But what the group didn’t realise, is just before the embers took over Stephen managed to grab the key to his handcuffs and set himself free.

When season five explodes onto screens, viewers will be wondering how the storyline will play out, particularly as in the books Murtagh has long been dead and the Frasers are already aware Stephen survives.

The novel then spends a great deal of time following the family trying to find and kill the evil ship captain, which also can’t play out in the same way in the series.

Will Stephen manage to get a head-start and end up ambushing the family unawares at Frasers’ Ridge?

If so, everyone – including Brianna and her baby – will be in grave danger.

Fans may expect Roger to be filled with more rage than anyone as he not only worked for Stephen on his ship but he regularly helped him too.

Will he launch into a full-scale revenge plot for his actions against his wife?

If producers decide to follow the plot of the books, then there could be a major showdown that showcases the Fraser women instead.

Stephen sneaks up on the family to try and kidnap Bree and her son, and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) takes centre-stage in an epic moment for the 20th Century surgeon.

But what other twists could the show have in store in the final fight scenes? And will everyone survive?

Outlander season five is expected to return to STARZ and Amazon Prime Video next year.
