Gear S3 may have a new low price but it could soon be challenged by a Samsung rival

Until later last year, Samsung’s Gear S3 was its top-end flagship smartwatch.

But with the Korean technology firm releasing the new Galaxy Watch in 2018 the S3 has now been superseded and that means it’s now much cheaper to buy.

In fact, prices for this Gear S3 device have plummeted in recent months with fans able to strap one to their wrist for £209 – almost £100 cheaper than the new Galaxy Watch.

The Gear S3 arrives with numerous fitness and smart features including heart rate tracking and the ability to read and send messages on the 1.3-inch screen without touching your phone.

It’s also water resistant, has a four-day battery life and includes the option of switching the straps for an instant new look.

Despite its age, the Gear S3 is still a good option for anyone who wants to try a smartwatch for the first time but it’s worth noting that something new could be coming from Samsung soon.

A recent rumour from SamMobile suggests that the Koren firm could be planning to release a new sports watch.

These would replace the current Gear Sport models which are currently on sale with updates likely to include improved battery and fitness monitoring.

SamMobile is speculating that the new device will be called the Galaxy Watch Active which would make some sense as it would keep it in line with the new Galaxy Watch branding which was announced last year.

Little else is known about this new wearable but an unveiling could come soon.

Samsung has its major Unpacked event which is taking place later this month with its new smartphones expected to be the star of the show.

But this launch could be the perfect time to reveal a new wearable, especially with the Mobile World Congress trade show then taking place a few days later.

Express.co.uk will be at Samsung’s Unpacked show in London and making the trip to Barcelona for MWC and will bring you all the news live from these major events.

Samsung’s Unpacked event opens its doors on February 20 with MWC starting on February 25.
