Batman: Ben Affleck CONFIRMS exit from DC Comics franchise

Ben Affleck has played Bruce Wayne aka Batman since 2016. Despite Affleck’s popularity, his iteration of the character was not a critical success. Nor was his time as Batman a box office smash either.

In the last six months, rumours about Affleck’s future with the franchise have circulated.

Affleck denied he would be stepping down from the role.

However, in a recent tweet, he seems to have confirmed the rumour as true.

Affleck retweeted a story which said Matt Reeves’ The Batman would be made without him as the titular character.

He wrote: “Excited for #TheBatman in Summer 2021 and to see @MattReevesLA vision come to life.”

Reeves’ previous credits include Cloverfield and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Initially, however, Affleck himself was set to star and direct The Batman.

In 2017 Affleck pulled out of the directing role for the film.

A statement from the actor and Warner Bros from January 2017 read: “It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require.

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions.

“Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give.”

Though Affleck is not appearing in the next Batman movie, he is not without projects.

Affleck stars in Netflix’s upcoming Triple Frontier with Oscar Isaac (Star Wars), Charlie Hunnam (Papillon), Garrett Hedlund (Tron), and Pedro Pascal (Narcos).

Nor is The Batman the last in the DC Comics film adaptations.

The studio has a Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix on its schedule, as well as Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey.

Warner Bros’ 2016 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was Affleck’s first turn in the cape.

From there he played Batman in Suicide Squad and in 2017’s Justice League.

The Batman is out in cinemas on June 25, 2021.
