Anthony Davis: Pelicans make big decision over NBA star amid Lakers talks

That is what NBA The Ringer podcast host Justin Verrier claims.

Davis told the franchise on Monday that he wanted to leave and would not sign a new deal.

He was originally set to be offered a supermax contract during the summer, which would see him earn an eye-watering $240million over five years.

But Davis instead wants to leave and play for a team who can compete consistently, it was claimed by his agent Rich Paul.

Paul, of Klutch Sports, also works for LeBron James, and it is believed that Davis wants to link up with ‘The King’ in Los Angeles.

The Lakers have reportedly contacted the Pelicans to organise a trade, but their call was not returned, according to ESPN.

Meanwhile, Davis was removed from New Orleans’ pre-match hype video, and there is talk suggesting that he will not play for the franchise again, as they prepare to trade him in the summer.

And Verrier explained that he feels the Pelicans have acted too quickly, and there is no turning back now.

“It seems like they’re being overly petty pretty quickly,” he explained.

“And I wonder if they came to this emotional rash hard*** decision sooner than they needed to.

“They’re taking him off all of their board stuff, and we’re at the point where there’s no return here.

“You can’t go back from what they’ve done.

Davis is currently unavailable for selection as he is still recovering from a finger injury, but he is expected to be confirmed as one of the All-Star reserves.

And Verrier believes that if he can play, Davis will want to, in order to save face.

“Legacy is important to him, he wants to play in the All-Star game,” he continued.

“And it would be a bad look for him if he didn’t play in the All-Star game, but he was healthy.”
