Rams coach Sean McVay reveals Greg Zuerlein injury update ahead of Super Bowl

Zuerlein is hoping to recover from a foot sprain so he can participate in Sunday’s game in Atalanta.

The 31-year-old suffered his injury in bizarre fashion after stepping on a steel plate during a half-time warm up in the Rams NFC Championship game against the New Orleans Saints.

McVay confirmed Zuerlein had limited training in the session and also gave an update on Safety Blake Countess’ injury. Both players are currently the only two listed on the Rams injury report.

“Greg Zuerlein kicked a little bit, and he’s on track,” McVay said.

“And I believe Blake will be good, but we want to be smart with him earlier this week.”

“I think Blake will be OK with his foot and same thing with Greg.

“Really that’s all you can ask for this time of year to be as healthy as we are.”

Zuerlein played a crucial role in helping the Rams reach the Super Bowl.

Despite sustaining the injury in the Saints game, he still put on a fantastic performance as he made two pressure kicks as the Rams beat the Saints 26-23 in overtime.

The first was a 48-yard curving kick, which tied the game at 23-23 and sent the game into overtime.

This was then eclipsed with a season-best 57-yard kick, which secured the victory and sent Los Angeles on their way to Georgia.

After picking up the left foot injury Zuerlein brushed off the severity, despite it forcing him to have limited practice time 11 days later.

“Hit something hard in the ground. Just warming up at halftime,” Zuerlein said after the Saints game.

“[I] landed on something that didn’t give as much as turf and then that’s when it started hurting.”

“It hurt, but not enough to stop me from playing, obviously.

“It really wasn’t anything special about it, just get the job done.”

The Rams training session took place at the Atlanta Falcons’ team facility in Flowery Branch and McVay was glad to get back on the field.

“It was good really for players and coaches,” he said.

“You almost get away from it a couple of days. It’s good just to sharpen yourself up, making sure we’re tightening all the screws on the game plan.

“I thought the players did a nice job just getting a little bit of a lather.

“It was really a big emphasis on above the neck, and then tomorrow and Friday will be good to kind of finalise the week.”
