Newcastle fans SLAM Danny Mills for what he said about record signing Miguel Almiron

Almiron arrived in Newcastle this afternoon for medical ahead of a club-record £21m move.

The 24-year-old starred for Atlanta United as they won the MLS Cup in December.

The Paraguay international scored 21 goals in 62 league appearances for Atlanta is highly rated.

But Mills was sceptical about the deal, claiming it is uninspiring.

“I’ve never really heard of him, in all honesty,” Mills said on BBC 5 Live.

“It’s not a signing that makes you go ‘Oh wow, this is inspiring’.

“It may be a record signing but it’s not that stellar signing who you know is going to score goals.

“He is very much an unknown. He might take time to settle as well.”

Mills was then taken to task about his lack of knowledge about Almiron with Newcastle fans blasting the former England international.

One fan said: “Cancel the deal, Danny Mills has never heard of him and isn’t inspired.”

Another wrote: “I have no idea whether Almiron will be a success.

“One thing I do know, however, is that Danny Mills is utterly clueless.”

One fan hit out at the BBC saying: “@BBCSport Do you actually pay money to Danny Mills for this insight?”

And another said he would back Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez’s judgement over Mills saying: “I think I’d trust Rafa and his network of contacts over an ex-Leeds defender.”

Despite Mills’ comments Benitez said he hoped the deal would be completed today.

“Hopefully we can finish everything on Wednesday,” he said after his side’s 2-1 win over Manchester City last night.

“I knew before the game we were doing some business, so hopefully we have some good news.”
