‘Fake news’: Melania Trump’s husband Donald blasts paper via tweet after Telegraph apology

The Telegraph has issued an apology to Melania Trump, addressing a story published on the cover of their magazine on 19 January. The newspaper clarified a number of corrections to the piece. It wrote: “We have been asked to make clear that the article contained a number of false statements which we accept should not have been published.” This includes alleging that her father was “a fearsome presence”.

It added: “Mrs Trump was not struggling in her modelling career before she met Mr Trump, and she did not advance in her career due to the assistance of Mr Trump.”

Donald hit out at the newspaper in defence of his wife.

He retweeted a tweet from Brit Hume, a a senior political analyst at the Fox News Channel: “One wonders how so many falsehoods could be crammed into a single article. Proof, if any were needed, that bias makes journalists reckless.”

Donald Trump added to the tweet: “Thank you to Brit. This is a very big deal in Europe. Fake News is the Enemy of the People!”

The newspaper added: “As a mark of our regret we have agreed to pay Mrs Trump substantial damages as well as her legal costs.”

Melania previously successfully sued the parent company of the Daily Mail, Daily Mail and General Trust.

The Mail paid her $2.9 million (£2.2m) after falsely claiming the First Lady has worked for an escort service while working as a model.

Melania Trump spoke out during the government shutdown this week.

On Monday she broke her silence to say: “Today we honour the life and legacy of #MartinLutherKingJr #MLKDay.”
