Outlander season 4 spoilers: Bosses’ finale twist explained as show takes new direction

Everything looked rosy as Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan), Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) found themselves back at River Run.

They were reunited with Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and her newborn baby on the Starz series.

But not before long, trouble came knocking at the door on Outlander.

British soldiers stormed through the house and while those inside thought they were there to find the escaped Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) that wasn’t the case.

They told Jamie the king had sent an order for him to form a militia in order the find the law breaker.

Die hard fans who have also read the source material will know this isn’t how things quite go in the books and so they may have been surprised by the twist ending.

In the novels penned by Diana Gabaldon, at this point in the series Murtagh has already died.

Jamie must now hunt down his own godfather in a storyline diversion that will no doubt rock fans to their very core.

Now, the producers of the fantasy series have revealed they chose this direction for good reason.

Executive producer Maril Davis told The Hollywood Reporter: ”Knowing we have two more [seasons] gave us the ability to tell a different type of story and save certain things and set some things up for the next season.

“Certainly next season we’ll get to explore more of Jamie and Murtagh potentially being on different sides of the line of this conflict and what will happen to them.

“They’re family, godson and godfather, and for Jamie to be put in this predicament, he made a deal with the devil, and we wanted to end the season on a cliffhanger.

“This starts to set the table for the next season in wondering what Jamie’s going to do.”

But viewers will have to wait and see exactly how it all unfolds.

The news that the hugely popular show had been commissioned for both a fifth and sixth series was revealed last year.

Stars CEO Chris Albrecht said: “Fans can rest assured their beloved Claire and Jamie will be back facing new challenges, adversaries and adventures in seasons five and six as we delve into American history and continue the story of the Frasers as they settle in the New World.”

Meanwhile, Claire star Caitriona posted to her Instagram: “So thrilled to announce that we have been picked up for not one but two more seasons.

“This series has been such a dream come true and to know that we will get to continue to tell the story of these characters that we love so much makes me so bl**dy happy.”

The fifth series will be adapted around the fifth book in the series, The Fiery Cross.

Just like the four instalments that came before it, season five is expected to have 13 episodes.

Outlander season 5 will return to Starz and Amazon Prime.
