Tottenham transfer news: Dimitar Berbatov picks out potential Mauricio Pochettino signing

That is according to former Spurs ace Dimitar Berbatov, who has recalled his own experience as evidence that type of deal might work.

Tottenham are in the market for a forward before the transfer window shuts next week with Kane facing more than a month on the sidelines.

A whole host of options have been touted as potential targets, including Andy Carroll, Marko Arnautovic and Malcom.

Berbatov cannot see Tottenham raiding West Ham or Barcelona for any of those three possible options.

Although he thinks he has a solution which would work for Mauricio Pochettino in the short term, as well as when Kane is back in the fold.

“The other option is for Spurs to go for an older, more experienced talent on loan until the end of the season,” Berbatov told Betfair, having weighed up reported interest in Carroll, Arnautovic and Malcom.

“Someone who is in good shape but realistic enough to accept a bit-part role behind Kane.”

Berbatov has reflected on his own spell at Monaco as proof an older head could do a job for Tottenham.

Although he admits it will be tough to get the right man on board at this stage of the campaign.

“It worked for me when I moved from Fulham to Monaco in the January transfer window after Falcao suffered an injury,” Berbatov added.

“I enjoyed myself straightaway, scored goals and ended up signing for another season.

“Who is the current Berbatov though? Again, I don’t know.

“It just highlights what a tricky time it is to buy a player.

“In the end maybe Spurs won’t buy anyone.

“It’s not like it hasn’t happened before of course.”

Tottenham have a week to go before the January transfer window closes, with fixtures against Crystal Palace and Watford to come in that time too.
