Parkinson’s disease – four diet swaps to lower your risk of Parkinson’s symptoms

Parkinson’s disease is a condition that causes the brain to become progressively more damaged over time, according to the NHS. It’s caused by a loss of nerve cells in a specific part of the brain, which are used to help send messages between the brain and nervous system. The most common Parkinson’s disease symptoms include tremors and slow movement. But, you could lower your chances of developing Parkinson’s symptoms by eating more whole grain bread, it’s been revealed.

Eating more whole grain bread could lower your risk of constipation, according to charity The Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson’s Research.

Constipation is a common symptom of Parkinson’s disease, and making some diet swaps could help to relieve the condition.

Whole grain breads contain fibre, which helps to loosen stools and clear the bowels.

Alternatively, you should consider drinking warm drinks – especially in the morning – to stimulate passing stools.

“Constipation is common in Parkinson’s disease,” said the charity. “Increased fluid and fibre consumption can help maintain regularity.

“Aim to drink six to eight glasses of water per day. Warm liquids, especially in the morning, can stimulate bowel movements.

“Dietary sources of fiber consist of fruits [with the peel], vegetables, legumes, whole grain breads and cereals. Most of these are high in antioxidants as well.”

Parkinson’s disease could also lead to low blood pressure, and it’s also a side-effect of some medications.

Cutting back on the amount of caffeinated drinks in your diet – including coffee – could help you to avoid low blood pressure, it added.

“Raising fluid and salt intake will boost blood pressure, but talk with your physician, especially if you have heart or kidney problems,” it said.

“Limit caffeinated beverages, hot liquids and alcohol as these encourage dehydration and low blood pressure.”

Some patients may develop painful muscle cramping – especially at nighttime, it added.

But, eating more yellow mustard could be crucial to avoiding these painful cramps, as it contains turmeric.

More common Parkinson’s disease symptoms include tremors, slow movement, and stiff muscles.

The symptoms tend to develop very slowly, and may only appear as mild during its early phases.
