Why is Camilla Duchess of Cornwall’s tiara worth millions more than Princess Diana’s?

Princess Diana, who tragically died in 1997, and Camilla Parker Bowles, 71, both married the same man. The wives of Prince Charles, 70, has access to some the world’s most precious jewels, as the other half of the future King of Britain. The Queen opened her jewellery collection to the women. Each had their favourite tiara, but whose cost more?

Princess Diana’s Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara – £1 – 2 million

Diana was seen waring this piece on numerous occasions.

It was made by Garrards in 1914 for Queen Mary who designed it and left it in her Will to her Majesty, The Queen.

The very heavy piece went back into The Queen’s collection after Diana died in 1997.

Now, it has been passed to The Duchess of Cambridge who first wore it in 2016.

Deborah Papas, gemmologist and jewellery expert from Prestige Pawnbrokers of Channel 4’s Posh Pawn told Express.co.uk: “I am not surprised the tiara was prone to give headaches! It is large and made from platinum, which is a dense metal and would be at least 95 per cent pure, giving a heavy mount to start with.

“The pearls are large and together with the array of varying sizes of diamonds, would add to a hefty weight.’

Deborah went on: “The tiara has 19 arches and has a single drop oriental pearl suspended from a lover’s knot in each one graduating slightly in size around the piece.

“These drops are flexible and shows a shimmering movement as the head is turned.”

So, how much is it worth?

“The piece is hard to value due to the complexity of the make and the large number of diamonds to consider as well as natural pearls which are rare to find in this size and shape.

“However, I would think it could be worth in the region of £1 – 2 million.”

Camilla Parker Bowles’ Greville Tiara – £2 – 3 million

This tiara is named after its former owner, the Hon. Dame Margaret Helen Greville who was a friend of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and bequeathed it to Queen Elizabeth when she died in 1942, and then onto the Royal collection on her death in 2002.

It was made by Boucheron, the Parisian luxury jewellery house in 1921 and became one of The Queen Mother’s favourite pieces.

Deborah said: “The design was altered by The Queen Mother in 1953 which she had carried out by Cartier.

“The main piece has three very large tapered diamonds rubover set in the centre of elongated hexagons which are pavé set with more diamonds.

“The top “row” had five tapered rubover diamonds which were altered to a cluster of four diamonds and one extra marquise cut diamond for the centre giving it a grander “taller” feel.

“Although it is called the Greville tiara, it has been known to be called the Boucheron Honeycomb tiara after its creator.”

How much does this favourite piece of Camilla’s, on long term loan to the Duchess, cost?

“Again, a difficult piece to put a value but set in platinum with its numerous stunning diamonds and given the fact it is a Boucheron piece, I would estimate it to be in the region of £2 – 3 million,” Deborah.
