Tin Star season 2 spoilers: Writer reveals the truth behind BIG storyline twist

Stars Tim Roth, Genevieve O’Reilly, Abigail Laurie, and Christina Hendricks are all back to reprise their roles for the hugely-popular crime thriller Tin Star tonight, in a second offering set to be just as explosive as the show’s first run.

Season one of the hit drama tore apart the Worth family when parents Angela (played by Genevieve) and Jim (Tim) saw their son shot in front of them.

As the plot thickened over the course of 10 episodes viewers finally discovered it was Anna’s (Abigail) shady new boyfriend.

As the story unfolded, fans were left shocked to learn Jim had a violent alcoholic alter-ego called simply Jack, and the character showed up to both protect his family and when red mist descended.

In a show-stopping finale, Jack killed Anna’s boyfriend despite her begging him not to, and Jack/Jim was shot and left for dead at the top of a mountain in the middle of the bitter Canadian winter.

But as fans anticipate what’s coming next, writer Alison has teased a major secret about the show’s format.

“Seasons one and two were meant to be a continuation following on from each other,” she told Express.co.uk and other media. “Season three would be a completely new story [if it goes ahead].”

So in that vein, viewers can expect to see the family’s journey from episode one of season one come full circle in the second season finale, but will they come back together in the end?

Shedding light on the plot, Alison continued: “That’s the beauty of television.

“If you’ve made a series and you go on to make a second series, with characters that you love, it gives you the opportunity in the script and also in the vein of it.

“To dig deeper into those characters, you know what works, and the things that you’re less interested in, and you can develop them much more.

“And I think that’s the exciting thing about being given the opportunity to do a second series with characters that you love already,” the writer clarified.

What’s more, Alison revealed she thinks the country the series is set and filmed – Canada – is actually just as important to the series as the main characters.

Joking “money” was the reason TV is continually expanding onto a wider canvas, she then said: “It’s simple, I think we’re able to work on a bigger canvas now with television than we used to be able to.

“We have more time to be able to do it,” Alison simply revealed.

“We’ve got the opportunity to work with a bigger cast, a more experienced cast, plus the newer cast coming in.

“And then you go to amazing places like Canada, and Canada as you’ve seen, I hope you agree, is a really beautiful exciting character of the piece.

“A long time ago you wouldn’t have been able to do that.”

“Now we can – we can think on a big scale both visually and narratively, and emotionally,” the producer added.

Tin Star season two returns tonight at 9pm on Sky Atlantic.
