Danny Dyer: ‘It’s astonishing’ EastEnders star hits out at Brexit crisis after NTA win

Danny Dyer, 40, won the award for Best Serial Drama Performance for his role in EastEnders at the National Television Awards last night.

Following his emotional acceptance speech, the star soon chatted about Brexit and said he still doesn’t know what it means.

The dad of Love Island star Dani Dyer said he believes the vote on the outcome of Britain leaving the EU needs to be “put off again”.

Danny told BBC Radio 5 live at the National Television Awards last night: “We still don’t understand what on earth Brexit means.

“I think they’ve got to put it off again. It’s either we just leave with ‘no deal’, which is what I think a lot of people voted for because we were told it would be alright.

“So it’s like ok we’re going to leave, we’re just going to leave everything, we’ll pay them a bit of money and we’re going to own everything, our sovereign and all this sort of stuff.”

“It’s clearly not the case,” Danny added. “So why have you put this vote in front of us? When we’ve got a government that just can’t really deal with it, that were never really up for it.

“So it’s just astonishing that these people have let us down as much as they have really.”

The actor also hit out at former Prime Minister David Cameron and said he “should be held accountable” for the current situation.

Danny had a very successful evening at the awards ceremony as he won the Best Serial Performance for playing Mick Carter in EastEnders.

The star became tearful as he took to the stage to accept the gong at London’s 02 Arena.

The BBC One actor was emotional as he dedicated the award to late playwright Harold Pinter, who died in 2008 and was a friend of Danny’s.

Danny said: “I want to dedicate this award to Harold Pinter. I miss him.

“He believed in me when no-one else did.”

The star continued: “I’m so f*****g emotional I don’t know what’s the matter with me for f***s sake.”

He then rounded off his speech by adding: “Two rules, curb your ego, nourish your soul, goodnight.”

National Television Awards 2019 host Dermot O’Leary was forced to apologise for Danny’s language after his speech.

Dermot said: “Yeah, we’re sorry about that don’t give the award to Danny Dyer.”

Meanwhile, Danny will be back on TV again tonight in BBC One show Danny Dyer’s Right Royal Family where he will explore his family history.

Danny Dyer’s Right Royal Family airs tonight on BBC One at 9pm.
