CBS is yet to give Star Trek Discovery season three the official green light, however the global fanbase of the show could help any make any decisions.

Star Trek Discovery season 2 was given the go-ahead not long after the first run started airing, showing CBS’ confidence in the series.

Season one of Star Trek Discovery premiered in September 2017, while the second run premiered on January 17 on CBS in America.

Going by previous air dates, Star Trek Discovery season three could be premiering at some point in 2020 but it will be dependent on if and when the show receives a renewal and when filming starts.

CBS is expanding its Star Trek television offerings with a Jean-Luc Picard limited series, an adult animated show called Lower Decks, and a Michelle Yeoh Philippa Georgiou spin-off all confirmed.

Discovery’s showrunner Alex Kurtzman also signed a five-year deal with CBS and will be developing Star Trek content for the network, suggesting that season three is likely to be on the cards.

What will happen in Star Trek Discovery season 3?

The plot of season three will be entirely dependent on how the second run of Star Trek Discovery pans out, which we won’t know for quite a while.

However, Discovery fans can expect more of the same from the show as the crew is faced with further challenges and foes.

The show is set 10 years before the event of The Original series, so it’s likely that we will see more historical events from this time period and Starfleet’s relationship with other races in this era.

Who is in the cast of Star Trek Discovery season 3?

The central cast of the show are expected to be returning unless something drastic happens in season two and a character is killed off.

So most likely Sonequa Martin-Green is going to be returning as lead Michael Burnham.

In fact, she recently said about the privilege of starring in the show: “That is enervating to me. It makes me want to do better as a human being.

“It causes me to want to rise up and be better because I feel like I need to live up to the story that we’re telling.”

Other cast members likely to be reprising their roles are Doug Jones as Saru, Shazad Latif as Voq/Ash Tyler, Anthony Rapp as Paul Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly and Wilson Cruz as Hugh Culber.

Michelle Yeoh could be back in the frame as Philippa Georgiou, but this depends on the filming schedule of her own Star Trek spin-off series.

Peck may well return as Spock and Anson Mount could be back as Christopher Pike.

Kurtzman is very likely to be remaining showrunner on Discovery after telling Variety: “I feel such a debt to the cast and drew of this show — I don’t feel like I can leave it.”
