PS4 news: Shock Microsoft Xbox update following big news for Sony PlayStation fans

The good times keep rolling for Sony and their PlayStation consoles in 2019.

Not only have multiple exclusive PS4 games proved big sellers but they are also picking up awards.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is up for several gongs in 2019 and has also been confirmed to have sold millions since release.

It was recently confirmed that it was the best-selling superhero game in the United States.

And it has now been revealed that Peter Parker’s latest adventure has sold more than 9 million copies worldwide.

And that’s without the latest data from December and January, helping to show how Sony’s strategy of developing major AAA single-player projects has paid off.

And new reports this week suggest that that PS4 is only widening the gap against Microsoft’s Xbox One.

It was revealed earlier this year that the PlayStation 4 has sold over 90 million units worldwide.

So it might not surprise gamers that the gap between Xbox One sales and the PS4 continues to grow larger.

November was a massive month for PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch sales, with each company projected to have sold at least one million units each.

It made for a great way to finish off the year, and new stats show just how important it was.

According to new data from the United States, the PlayStation 4 sold 800,000 more units than the Xbox One S and Xbox One X in 2018.

This includes November, a month in which over 100,000 more PS4 consoles were sold than its Microsoft rival in the key regional market.

This information comes from a VGChartz report, which reveals: “In November 2018 the gap in the US between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One grew in favour of the PlayStation 4.

“The PlayStation 4 sold 164,596 more units than the Xbox One in the last month.

“The PlayStation 4 also sold 838,305 more units in the last year. The PlayStation 4 currently leads by 3.79 million units.

“The PlayStation 4 launched in the US on November 15, 2013, while the Xbox One launched on November 22, 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 27.51 Million units, while the Xbox One has sold 23.71 million units.”

This followed further PS4 news regarding its success in the console market. Not only have PlayStation sales remained healthy, but they also include one killer feature that the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch don’t have.

A whole swathe of exclusive VR games that can only be played properly using the PlayStation VR.

So how important is the PSVR headset to Sony’s future plans?

Well, it appears that when it comes to support, developers are seeing positive numbers from the platform.

Fast Travel Games CEO Oskar Burman has revealed sales data that shows just how popular the platform is when compared to others.

Apex Construct is available on varying hardware and it appears that it’s sold best on PS4.

According to Burman, Apex Construct outsold both Steam and the Oculus Store combined.

This is the current split in Apex Construct sales: PSVR: 58% – Steam: 23% and Oculus Store: 19%.

And while these numbers will be pleasing to Sony PlayStation, Burman also backed the idea that the VR market is growing.

Commenting on the sales numbers on Twitter, Burman added: “PlayStation has taken an even bigger share since last time I shared numbers, which is what to expect considering indications of strong PSVR sales in 2018.

“But the VR market as a whole is clearly growing too. December was one of the best months ever for Apex, so my guess is a bunch of people found a new VR HMD under the Christmas tree in 2018.”

Meanwhile, sales on Viveport accounted for less than 1%, according to Burman.

If the Virtual Reality market is growing, it would mean that PlayStation is in a great position to be at the front of it in 2019 and beyond.

Reports indicate that Sony is looking to include PlayStation VR support in the PS5, probably through an upgraded device.

And that’s not the only new project that PlayStation is reportedly working on.

From a string of recent job listings, it appears Sony is working on some important next-gen projects.

The company are currently looking for a new Staff Software Engineer, which, according to the listing, will be working towards upgrading the current PlayStation Network.

Not only this but it sounds like they’re preparing for a big leap in the future.

The job listing confirms that the role will be handling both old and new services, which will be part of the “The next generation data platform.”

The listing reads: “This is a high-visibility technical leadership position with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) platform engineering organisation to establish a highly available, fault-tolerant, globally distributed data platform and services.

“The next generation data platform serves the global, fast-growing PlayStation Network customer base.

“This key role will lead the technology transformation of the network data platform including existing and new services supporting the dramatic customer growth on the platform.”
