Man Utd news: This is the real reason behind Anthony Martial contract talks – Upson

That’s according to former Premier League defender Matthew Upson who reckons Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given the Frenchman a new lease of life.

“I think the feel-good factor around Man Utd has definitely helped these contract talks develop,” he told Sky Sports.

“Since Jose Mourinho left the club there has been a completely different feeling in the dressing room and all around the club.

“It’s very positive for him.

“It’s an amazing club to play for and the fact he has been playing a bit more central or up front in a two under Solskjaer has really helped him.”

Speaking in an interview with Norwegian outlet TV2, Martial revealed he had been encouraged to “play to his strengths” by Solskjaer.

He said: ”He [Solskjaer] talked about a lot of different things when we were there.

“He told us about tricks that he picked up as a player, and how lucky we are to be a part of United.

“It’s been great for me to work with a manager who also was an attacker when he played.

“He gives me good advice, especially when it comes to positioning in front of goal and finishing technique. It’s helped me a lot.

“The best advice I’ve received from him is that I need to play to my strengths.

“He also told me not to put too much pressure on my self, and try to express myself on the pitch.”

Manchester United host Brighton at the Theatre of Dreams this afternoon.

Under Solskjaer’s stewardship the Red Devils are on a stunning run of form.

The affable Norwegian has won six on the bounce.

“Yes, we will lose a game,” he explained ahead of the clash with the Seagulls.

“Yes, we will have to react to it and get up the next morning.

“I’ve seen enough to know they have the character to turn it round, and I know I too have that character.”

Given United’s impressive displays, they are yet to go behind in a match.

“It’s a different kind of test for me and the players. How do we react?” he added.

“How do the players react when we go 1-0 down? How do I react when we go 1-0 down?

“I’ve been 1-0 down a few times in my career as a manager but I haven’t had the quality of players like I have now.

“I have to say that I’m looking forward to seeing them go one goal down and turning it around because they’ve done it so many times this year.”
