Wendy Williams to take extended break from talk show for Graves’ disease treatment

Wendy Williams won’t be able to give her pithy pop-culture commentary for awhile.

Williams’ family announced Friday that the daytime talk-show host will take an extended leave from her syndicated “Wendy Williams Show” for health reasons. The statement did not cite a return date.

The show will air repeats next week and returns with new episodes featuring guesthosts on Jan. 28.

Williams is taking a break for treatment for Graves’ disease, an immune disorder that causes overproduction of thyroid hormones, according to the Mayo Clinic. Her treatment requires strict supervision from doctors and “significant time spent in the hospital,” the statement says. It notes that Williams also recently fractured her shoulder, but is “on the mend.”

Wendy Williams arrives during the 2014 Soul Train Awards in Las Vegas.

Thehost has been public about her battle with the disease, which has forced her to take time off from her show before, including last February, when she took three weeks’ rest at her doctor’s orders.

An excess of thyroid hormones can cause heart palpitations and tremors, rendering them anxious, irritable and shaky. And in about 30% of patients (including Williams), the disease also inflames the muscles and tissues around the eyes. Last year Williams told her audience that’s why her eyes often appear to bulge out of their sockets.

In December, Williams apologized for an awkward on-air event in which she appeared to slur her words, explaining that she took painkillers before going on and citing her fracture and Graves’ disease as contributing factors.
