Man Utd news: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to meet Ed Woodward for interview – he needs two things

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was given the Old Trafford job in an interim role by Woodward back in December.

The 45-year-old has worked wonders with the Red Devils in the time since, steering them to six wins in a row over Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Reading and Tottenham.

Manchester United are understood to crave the arrival of Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino but, with Solskjaer enjoying such a strong start, calls for the Norwegian to land the role full-time have increased in volume.

And The Sun say Solskjaer is set for a formal interview with Woodward about the role.

United feel this is an appointment they need to get right.

David Moyes was nothing short of a disaster, lasting just 10 months despite being given a six-year contract.

Under Louis van Gaal, the style of play was awful with an FA Cup triumph in 2016 the only highlight from an otherwise forgettable reign.

Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, paid the price for his dark and dour mood last month.

Woodward, it seems, is now willing to give Solskjaer a platform to prove he is the right man for the role.

Yet The Sun say he needs to prove himself in two key areas.

Firstly, he needs a good transfer strategy.

United are understood to be lining up a director of football following their scattergun approach to signings in recent years.

Moyes didn’t get a chance to prove himself in the market but his two additions – Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata – have impressed.

Van Gaal went for youth, whereas Mourinho went for proven, and that too has harmed United.

Their squad now is made up of players from all three managers, plus the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.

And a good transfer strategy going forward will be a major ace in Solskjaer’s hand.

Another thing he needs is a ‘firm idea on the way forward’.

Solskjaer must reportedly convince the United board that they will be in the mix for a top four spot and silverware come the end of the season.

Yet whether he can do enough to deter United from approaching Pochettino remains to be seen.
